PRINCE2 Project Quality
The focus of PRINCE2 project quality is on the products it creates and these must be fit for purpose so that they will ultimately enable the desired benefits to be achieved. This is product focus ensures that in every project there is a clear understanding of what the project will create in terms of its scope, and the quality criteria for each of the products.
Project quality costs money, so you should not ‘gold-plate’ the amount of project quality that you need, and the PRINCE2 Quality Management Strategy sets out exactly what that level of project quality should be…
Project quality is about with how you manage your project, and the use of PRINCE2. Product quality is about the quality of the product (s) only.
Project quality focuses on customer satisfaction which is defined as conformance to requirements and fitness for use. The focus should be on stakeholder satisfaction when considering project quality as it is important that all stakeholders are satisfied.
Project quality should be planned, designed and built in rather than inspected in. For both product and project quality, the focus should also be on continuous improvement.
Also PRINCE2 project quality aspects covers the implementation of continuous improvement during the project by striving for more efficiency or effectiveness in both the project’s products and its management.
When referring to PRINCE2 project quality, it may be with regard to any product, a person, a process, a service, or a system that will meet expectations, requirements, specification or stated needs.
To ensure that a plan is accurately scoped, PRINCE2 uses the product based planning technique to create the product breakdown structure and goes on to create their associated Product Descriptions and quality criteria.
PRINCE2 project quality management is defined as the coordinated activities to direct and control an organisation with regard to quality. A quality management system is the complete set of quality standards, procedures and responsibilities for eyesight or organisation.
Because PRINCE2 assumes a customer/supplier environment, then each organisation must apply the above.
There are three key aspects to PRINCE2 project quality:
Project Quality planning is needed for control and covers definition of the products within the project along with their quality criteria, quality methods and quality responsibilities.
Project Quality control is reactive, and covers such techniques and project quality activities as quality inspections or testing, and finding ways of eliminating causes of and satisfactory performance. This is where the implementation of lessons learned can be helpful.
Project Quality Assurance. This must be independent of the project management team and ensure that the project’s direction and management remains aligned with relevant corporate or programme management standards and policies.
Project quality assurance therefore, is all about independently checking that the organisation and processes are in place for quality planning and control.
PRINCE2 Project Quality Assurance. This ensures that the project is being managed appropriately and must be independent of the project manager, project support, team managers and specialists he is. Project assurance is the responsibility of the Project Board.
It is the responsibility of corporate or programme management to provide the project with details of the organisations project quality management system. The executive of the project board must approve the Quality Management Strategy and the Project Product Description.
The PRINCE2 Senior User role must provide the customers with the customer quality expectations and acceptance criteria as well as approving Product Descriptions, resources and the methods for key user aspects. The Senior Supplier role will be responsible for the same items but from the supplier perspective with regard to project quality.
The PRINCE2 project manager will prepare and document all of the above and ensure that team managers implement the project quality control measures agreed in Product Descriptions and Work Packages.
The team manager will ensure that the specialist products are created in line with their Product Descriptions, and keep the Project Manager regularly informed on project quality and product quality status.
Project Assurance will assist, advise and assure the project board and the project manager on the application and implementation of all project quality matters. Project Support will provide administrative support for the project quality controls, Quality Register and quality records.
