PRINCE2 7 Principles Demystified – Part 2

As you can infer from Part of this article, the Themes in which the management by exception Principle is embedded are the Change Theme and Progress Theme.

Here is the overview diagram again:

The Issues Practice describes how all project issues are managed as well as determining the impact of any issue, and going on to establish what the estimate is for cost and time for example, to establish whether the stage tolerances will be exceeded.

The Progress Practice is used to readily review how the project is proceeding as compared to the original plans as well as updating them with actual information in terms of time and cost. In doing so, this will allow a new forecast to be made for the remainder of the plan.

This forecast in and of itself, could potentially take the project into exception.

PRINCE2 Principle – Manage by stages

Every PRINCE2 project is split into stages and this Principle is imbedded within the progress Theme because the stage boundary at the end of all stages, except the final stage, is a major control points at which are progress Is assessed by the Project Board.

This will relate directly to when often updating the overall Project Plan and Business Case, whether the Principle of Continued Business Justification is being maintained.

These two management products are arguably the most important of all, even on the small simple project, and can be thought of as the main drivers of any PRINCE2 Project.

The manage by stages Principle is also built into the Plans Theme. It is not possible to plan an entire project in detail at the outset. You may argue that this could be possible for small, simple and short projects, although this would depend a lot on the nature of the project and the environment within which the host organization operates.

You can see that it would be sensible to normally split projects into stages so that a realistic planning horizon can be used for the more detailed Stage Plans.

PRINCE2 Principle – Focus on products

In PRINCE2, the term product also mean deliverable or output and this is particularly true when considering specialist products.

To guarantee the correct outcome of the project in terms of the quality expected, is by defining the measurable acceptance criteria that we expect the final outputs all project product to satisfy.

To ensure the above can happen, it is vital to ensure that each of the individual specialist products in turn, satisfy their own measurable quality criteria and this is how the focus on products Principle is imbedded within the Quality Theme.

You may need to think carefully about why did the Focus on Products Principle is also imbedded within the plans Theme. The answer is that PRINCE2 Uses the product-based planning technique to identify and define the various specialist products Before thinking about the tasks or activities that will produce them.

PRINCE2 – Learn from experience

The fundamental Principle here is of learning from the experience of previous projects and passing on our own learning experiences, both good and bad, to future projects.
The learn by experience Principle is built into the Quality Theme because it involves continuous improvement.
