Checking out PRINCE2 7 diagrams and the practitioner exam
Some practitioner exam questions and product planning are based on supplied diagrams of which one or more will contain errors. you then must answer questions to say whether there’s an error in a part of the diagram

The most common exam approach to date has been to supply a product breakdown structure (PBS) and a product flow diagram (PFD) and say that the product breakdown structure is correct
You’re then required to find errors in the product flow diagram (PFD), some of which are based on inconsistencies with the correct product breakdown structure (PBS)
However, be well prepared for a faulty product breakdown structure as well, so you can handle any questions based on errors in either or both diagrams .
Checking a PRINCE2 product breakdown structure (PBS)
These all the key points you need to cover when you analyse a practitioner product breakdown structure (PBS) to find any potential errors:
- Is the top box the whole project, in other words, the project product?
- Are all the project products products and not activities, resources, sources of supply, and so on?
- Do the products correctly and completely reflect the project scenario? Do not forget to consult the original scenario information as well as any additional scenario information supplied for the “plans” section of the exam
- Are team products and practically boxes shown as rectangles?
- Are all external products correctly shown as ovals or ellipses?
- Where the scenario clearly says that a product is coming from outside the project, is a correctly shown as an external, and when a project team is producing a product, is it clearly modeled in a rectangle?
- Does the practitioner product breakdown structure breakdown cleanly, or does the diagram join back up again lower down which is an illegal and a logical structure?
- Are there any one-to-one connections where a group only has a single product, that is, there is a redundant level, because you cannot of a group of one? A one-to-one structure is illogical and illegal in the technique
Checking a PRINCE2 product flow diagram (PFD)
Make sure you check these points when looking at a practitioner product flow diagram with errors:
- Going by the information in the project scenario, are any dependency arrows incorrect?
- Again, based on the scenario, are any dependencies missing?
- Have all of the products and all the product breakdown structures been carried over to the product flow diagram, or have some been forgotten?
- Is the bottom box the whole project, in other words, the project product?
- Do the products correctly and completely reflect the project scenario?
- Are any elements of the sequence logical where they are not specified in the scenario?
As an example, you cannot have the product “cooked food” followed by the product “raw food” because it is not possible to un-cook food. - Are internal and team products correctly modelled? Where the product is shown as “external” on the product breakdown structure, has it changed into a team product on the product flow diagram?
Similarly, has a team product on the product breakdown structure become an external product on the product flow diagram? - Are all the products on the product flow diagram worded identically to the corresponding box for the same product on the product breakdown structure, and that includes the project product at the top of the product breakdown structure and the bottom of the product flow diagram?
Identically worded means exactly that, to the letter. - Have any new products mysteriously appeared on the product flow diagram that was not present on the product breakdown structure?
- Have any category boxes been included in the practitioner product flow diagram by mistake, as the product flow diagram only shows products, not category boxes?
- Does the product flow diagram flow smoothly through the project, with no loops joining a lower part back up to an upper part so that the project loops around forever and never finishes?
