The PRINCE2 7th Edition Practitioner Exam has evolved, bringing new challenges for project management professionals. As an accredited trainer who recently passed the live exam, I want to share my insights to help you prepare effectively.
This guide breaks down key question formats, scoring weightage, and essential topics to focus on—so you can walk into the exam room with confidence.
Understanding the PRINCE2 7 Practitioner Exam Structure
The 2025 PRINCE2 7th Edition Practitioner Exam consists of:
- 70 questions
- 150 minutes (2.5 hours)
- Passing score: 42 marks (60%)
The exam is open book, allowing the use of the PRINCE2 Official Guide, but familiarity with the material is crucial.
One of four predefined scenarios from the official guide (pages 12-17) will appear in the exam, accompanied by additional organizational resource details.
Thoroughly reviewing all four scenarios is essential for success.

Exam Scoring Focus: What to Prioritize
The PRINCE2 7th Edition exam places greater emphasis on PRINCE2 practices over processes. Here’s how the exam is weighted:
- Applying PRINCE2 principles in context – 10%
- Applying people management in projects – 9%
- Applying and tailoring PRINCE2 practices – 51%
- Applying and tailoring PRINCE2 processes – 30%
Since over half of the exam focuses on PRINCE2 practices, allocate more study time to these areas.
Types of PRINCE2 7 Practitioner Exam Questions
There are two key question formats:
Standard Questions
These assess decision-making based on PRINCE2 principles. A sample question may be:
”The project is in the ‘XXX’ process. The project manager has decided to do Y. Was this an appropriate action?”
Options:
a) Yes, because XXX
b) Yes, because YYY
c) No, because XXX
d) No, because YYY
Common variations include:
- Which principle is being applied?
- Is this an appropriate application?
- How well does this align with PRINCE2 methodology?
Matching Questions
These require linking roles to responsibilities. Example:
” Which role (A–E) is responsible for each action?”
Roles:
A. Project Manager
B. Team Manager
C. Senior User
D. Senior Supplier
E. Project Executive
For each action, you must assign the correct role.
Mastering Bloom’s Taxonomy Levels 3 and 4
The PRINCE2 7 exam requires higher-order thinking, categorized under Bloom’s Levels 3 & 4:
- Bloom’s Level 3 (BL3) – Apply knowledge to a situation.
- Bloom’s Level 4 (BL4) – Analyze provided information and evaluate the effectiveness of actions.
- All PRINCE2 7 principles are tested at BL4, requiring deep analytical skills.
Example BL4 Question:
“Analyze whether an approach to applying the (practice name) is effective, considering:”
- PRINCE2 principles
- Effective management techniques
- Tailoring to the project environment
For a typical Process exam question, an example BL4 question might be:
“Analyse whether the (process name) process activities, roles and responsibilities are effective and fit for purpose, taking into consideration:
- tailoring to the project’s environment/context
- the PRINCE2 practices
- the purpose and objectives of the process
Since BL4 questions are more challenging, dedicate extra study time to them.
Common Traps: Understanding “Dummy Answers”
In standard questions, at least one answer is typically a dummy answer—technically correct but irrelevant to the actual question.
To spot dummy answers
- Carefully read the question’s precise wording.
- Ask yourself: Does this answer directly address the question?
The New “People Element”
PRINCE2 7 has introduced a dedicated People Element, aligning with the Organizing Practice.
You should focus on:
- Leading successful change
- Building effective teams
- Communication strategies
- People-centric project management
Seven PRINCE2 Principles: Revised and Expanded
Although the seven core principles remain, some have been renamed and expanded. Read pages 19–28 carefully to understand the nuances, especially:
- Manage by stages vs. Manage by exception
- Sustainability as a new performance metric (pages 10–11)
Sustainability in PRINCE2 7
Sustainability is now embedded across all PRINCE2 practices. Pay special attention to how it is applied within the Business Case practice and the 17 UN Sustainability Goals.
PRINCE2 7 Scenarios: Hidden Clues
Scenarios throughout the official guide illustrate how PRINCE2 can be tailored.
These often contain subtle clues relevant to exam questions. Identify and study these carefully.
The New “Issues Practice”
The previous Change Theme has been restructured into Issues Practice, covering:
- Issue Management Approach
- Issue Register
- Issue Report
This section (pages 171–188) is critical, as it shows how change is now managed in PRINCE2 7.
Key RACI Table Insights
Each PRINCE2 7 process includes a RACI table, defining who is:
- Responsible (R)
- Accountable (A)
- Consulted (C)
- Informed (I)
Questions often ask:
- “Who is responsible for X?”
- “Who needs to be informed?”
Mastering these tables will improve your ability to answer responsibility-related questions correctly.
Product Descriptions: What Changed?
The quality criteria have been restructured into:
- Functional Specifications (how it performs and what it must do)
- Non-Functional Specifications (how it operates, including characteristics)
Understanding these updates is crucial for answering product-related questions accurately.
Final Preparation Tips
Use the PRINCE2 Official Guide Strategically
As an open-book exam, knowing where to find key information quickly can save valuable time.
Take Full-Length Mock Exams
Simulate real exam conditions to build confidence and time management skills.
Final Thoughts: Is PRINCE2 7 Harder Than PRINCE2 6?
In my experience, the PRINCE2 7th Edition Practitioner Exam is more challenging than its predecessor. The higher emphasis on analytical skills and new people and sustainability elements make thorough preparation essential.
