Many large companies and industries have evolved and developed forms of life cycle models such as Agile probably the most well known being the waterfall approach.  Another and more recent example is the evolution of the Agile method.

So how does PRINCE2 integrate with Agile and other  life cycle models?  The answer is very straightforward as the PRINCE2 methodology does not dictate how the specialist products should be created and verified. This suits the Agile ethos of time boxing.

Taking ensure all as an example here, it uses time boxing in concert with fixing the scope and not allowing any scope changes during each development iteration. PRINCE2 advocates the use of work packages each containing at least one product description and is therefore open to tailoring and hence its use with agile and other life cycle models.

Agile also states some extra roles that are required, and here again, PRINCE2 standard roles and responsibilities can be easily augmented.

Tailor PRINCE2 for your Agile Life Cycle

In order to tailor PRINCE2 is therefore important that the following points be considered:

• How to align the PRINCE2 management stages with the relevant development lifecycle?
• Utilising the most appropriate tolerances dependent upon the development focus
• Making decisions about how to incorporate specialist roles into the PRINCE2 project management team, and in particular and ensuring a sensible management level and reporting relationship has been designed.

PRINCE2 has a defined set of available management products, but different lifecycle models will normally have additional documentation that will need to be embedded within a typical project.  There may be some scope here for all commencing a management product with extra information, changing its name, or creating a new document.

The objective when developing a cohesive and agreed documentation set is to ensure that there is no duplication of PRINCE2 and the life-cycle documents, but that there should not be any missing documentation or information either.
