The PRINCE2 7 Managing Product Delivery Process – Part 1
So, what is managing product delivery all about?
The process of managing product delivery views the project from the team manager’s perspective.
The process of controlling a stage views it from the project manager’s perspective.

The good news about revising the PRINCE2 managing product delivery process is that this particular process has the smallest number of activities – just three intact. This process will be fairly fast to revise because those three activities are particularly simple in concept.
When revising the managing product delivery process, you will see that it is there to cover the work necessary to deliver the product of products involved in a particular work package.
The work package is simply a work assignment from the project manager to build a single product, or perhaps two or even more when it makes sense to build those products together.
It is important that you are clear on what a work package is. For the PRINCE2 practitioner exam in particular, check that you know what the individual Headings are in the work package are all about. If you think any explanations in the Manual are unclear, make some short notes on the Manual pages so you can look at your reminders during the exam.
Remember that you cannot take any PRINCE2 reference material at all into the foundation exam. However, for the practitioner level exam you can take your copy of the PRINCE2 Manual complete with any notes that you have written on to the Manual pages. You cannot take in separate notes in any form, even sticky notes stuck to the pages of the Manual.
Managing product delivery is part of PRINCE2 of course, which in turn is all about project management. So the activities in this process are not about doing the teamwork and about managing the teamwork.
In fact, the biggest part of the project is here because, in terms of PRINCE2, this is where all the team products are built and tested, but in management terms it is all very easy.
The three activities in the process can be summed up as “get the work package, build and test the products, and then hand the products back”
Team Manager actions
The team manager ensures that the team creates and delivers products during the project by:
- accepting authorized work packages from the project manager
- ensuring that the development, operations, and maintenance relationships identified in the
- work package description are maintained
- creating a team plan for the assigned work packages (this may be done in parallel with the
- project manager creating the stage plan for the stage)
- ensuring that the products are developed in accordance with any development methods specified in the work package description
- demonstrating that each product meets its quality specification through the quality methods specified in the product description
- obtaining approval for completed products from the authorities identified in the product description
- delivering the products to the project manager in accordance with any procedures specified in the work package description.
Understanding who runs the PRINCE2 managing product delivery process
By default, the managing product delivery process is run by a team manager but remember that the team manager role is optional. In a small project with only one team, there may not be a team manager, so the project manager will run the process instead.
In turn, that will make the interface between the process, managing product delivery, and the main process are being used by the project manager during the stage controlling a stage nominal.
The divide will still be there, but it will be limited because a project manager he’s not going to sit in the office, alone, and form we discuss the work package and agree it with their selves!
In a larger project with a number of teams working simultaneously on work packages, a similar number of team managers will use the process at the same time.
