JBA

will JBA system 21 run on v5r4 or upgrade to v6r1

Just what is JBA anyway?

JBA Softwre Company from BirminghamThe JBA ERP system is a 30 year old Enterprise Resource Planning system running on IBMi operating system (an on the earlier i5/OS and OS400 versions). I can sense your eyebrow raising when you read "30 years", but think of it as a system that has evolved for thirty years and grown incredibly. Originally developed and distributed by UK based company JBA (from in-house developed system called Olympic and also by blending in field developed products from many client sources). The entire product line was later bought and distributed by GEAC in the USA. Following the demise of GEAC the latest and greatest version is (at the time of writing) provided and supported by Infor.

  • The older JBA/GEAC versions of System21 and all related apps will run on any system upto and including V5R4.
  • The current version of System21 is called Aurora, supplied by Infor and runs on all the latest version of IBMi (currently IBMi Version6 but Version7 is in beta so watch this space)
I think that the last version of JBA System21 was V3.5.2 and this was the basis for the new improved Infor version. From what I understand, the Infor version is a total conversion of all the old System21 OPM RPG source Code to ILE RPG and recompilation. Infor has also added lots of new web-friendly components and modernised the entire package for the new millenium.

infor system looks good

What OS versions will JBA run on
  • JBA System 21 will run on all versions upto and including v5.4
  • Infor Aurora will run on all version upto and including the current version.
Upgrading to V6 is as big an upgrade as the old Cisc-Risc upgrade in the mid-nineties and requires programs to have their observability included in the object description to process each object as part of the upgrade.

My name is Nick Litten and I am an IT-a-holic

Hello, my name is Nick and I'm a geek-a-holic

I'm a IT Consultant primarily working on IBM Power Systems (IBMi, System-i, iSeries, AS400).

What does IT Consultant mean?

I'm a software developer, RPG and Drupal enthusiast, software change management evangelist, early adopter, proponent of open source and hopeless web addict. I've been an IBM RPG/CL Programmer since the 1980s. Was I ever that young? During this time like to think I've built a solid knowledge "IBM midrange" computers from AS400 upto the IBM'i' years.

View Nick Litten's profile on LinkedInI was born in the UK and growing up in a military family, we moved all over England and Europe during my formative years. My early career in IT was mainly based in and around London. It took me nearly 30 years to travel to this side of the pond and discover Sunny weather and Palm Trees. I was hooked and quickly decided to choose the South Carolina as home. Its beautiful and smack in the middle of the East Coast Technology belt.

I have a detailed technical knowledge of the IBMi/AS400 System on an operations basis and have worked with many AS400 applications. I specialise in the JBA (GEAC/INFOR) System/21 applications. Along with my senior programming skill level programming in RPG and CL languages - I strive to rapidly develop new software solutions and offer a best of class support system for existing computer systems and infrastructure. I've worked for clients all over the world and my experience in the distributing and manufacturing fields, as well as my capacity to easily transfer my knowledge are significant.

  • I'm serious, professional, autonomous and responsible.
  • I quickly appraise and resolve problems.
  • I work well under pressure, especially when schedules are tight.

I'm in the enviable position where my work is my hobby and I spend as much time at the keyboard playing with cool digital stuff as I do actually developing and deploying it.

Recommendations For Nick Litten

Freelance IBM i Developer @ Software Projex

“Nick's commitment and dedication to providing the highest quality technical solutions is second to none. Working with him as he helped launch an after-market parts & accessories B2C project gave me the opportunity to see his ability to break complex tasks into manageable deliverables, to combine modern web technologies with a legacy AS/400 application - including print functionaltiy, and after-deployment system support. Users find him a pleasure to work with and continually go to him for support and to discuss both existing features and functionality as well as system enhancements that they would like to implement. Nick can be counted on to consistently deliver when others fall short while being a pleasure to work with.”

Julie Kentner, IT Business Partner, E-Z-GO Textron, hired Nick in 2008

“Nick is a triple A rated i Series Consultant. Everytime I have recruited Nick for client projects he has delivered. But more than that, the feedback that I have had from clients has been that Nick always goes that bit further to bring value to the project in terms of ideas and team spirit. He is personable, very business minded and trustworthy. As a contract recruiter there is nothing I like more than to have clients raving about the contractors I recruit for them and clients have always done that with Nick.”

Steve Brown, Summit Consulting UK, hired Nick as a IT Consultant in 1998, and hired Nick more than once

I have used Nick's services many times over the past five years. He has built excellent web-sites and supporting services for my business, is always personable and listens carefully to our issues before offering a solution(s). Nick has a highly tuned commercial acumen and broad technical experience. Most importantly he responds quickly in a crisis and if he does not have the answer he will go and find it. I have recommended Nick to several friends and business colleagues who are all very happy with his service, attitude and charges. He is very professional and a thoroughly good bloke.

Adrian Sewell, Questix, hired Nick as a IT Consultant in 2002, and hired Nick more than once

IT Consultant @ Computer Medix

Nick has a great combination of expert knowledge and clear communication skills. He single-handedly built and installed our office systems with none of the problems which had plagued us with our previous IT supplier. Most import, his onsite training was clear, concise and his knowledge of everything from PC components to internet design is second to none.

AS400 Team Leader @ Dresdner Kleinwort

Nick is an exceptionally talented IT professional with particular expertise in the field of IBM i, iSeries, AS/400 development and technical management. I worked with Nick for several years in a specialist team tasked with turning around legacy AS/400 systems that had seriously lacked investment and management. Nick's ability to take such challenges on board resulted in a modernised, audit approved, and well managed environment with minimal impact to the business. There are few that I would personally rate as experts and Nick is one of them.

Ian King, Vice President, Dresdner Kleinwort worked directly with Nick at Dresdner Kleinwort

Nick worked on my team acting as technical guru across the iSeries platform, upgrading old RPG3 code to state of the art RPG/ILE and directing the team towards better technical use of the machine allowing improved application performance and system integration He is an excellent worker always looking for superior solutions, a very affable individual and I have no hesitation in recommending Nick from both a technical and personal perspective.”

the rise and fall of JBA Software - as400 System21

JBA was one of the world’s leading business software providers in the early 1990's. Based in Birmingham, it had offices nationwide due to explosive growth through the late 80's and early 1990's.

Founded in 1981 by two former IBM employees, JBA focused on developing business applications for the System38 and later the AS/400. Its flagship offering was System21, an enterprise wide management package that included modules for accounting, order processing, logistics, manufacturing, customer service warehousing solutions for anyone using AS400 systems. Complemented by unique solutions for specific industries, System 21 also gave many of the world’s leading food, automotive, drinks, style and service management companies the competitive advantage they needed in the nineties.

JBA’s ERP solutions were distinguished by their high functionality and closeness of fit to customer requirements. JBA was one of the first global ERP suppliers to provide industry sector specific products based on a standard commercial product set. These industry sector products contained many thousands of man years’ research and development which JBA went on to try to break down into a more component based technology.

In a 1995 report, the Gartner Group consultancy cited JBA's efforts to release graphical modules of its System 21 product as key to the vendor's ability to advance in the enterprise resource planning market.

During this time, the computer industry was separating into two distinctly different market places (a) larger companies who wanted to install and maintain themselves and (b) smaller companies who want a ‘one stop shop’ for hardware, software and middleware:

To meet these requirement JBA formed two dedicated divisions to focus on each area.

Software Solution Division comprised teams focused on selling software solutions primarily to larger companies, JBA's traditional marketplace.

Computer Solution Division comprises teams principally in North America focused on the ‘one stop shop’ with over 200 affiliates having front line customer responsibility and JBA being the second tier supplier of both hardware and software to them.

At the end of 1997 there were approx 3,000 people employed by the group worldwide and JBA was awarded the IBM AS/400 Star Stream Award for its integration of Lotus Domino with System 21 ERP. JBA was one of IBM’s largest strategic Business Partners worldwide, an IBM Premier Solution Provider, IBM Distributor, IBM Global Financing Partner and Lotus Notes Business Partner.

In 1999, JBA was was acquired by Geac Computer Corporation, a Canadian company for $137 million. JBA offices were cut back and the it's inhouse development was curtailed. No fruther release of JBA System21 were to appear.

The final release of JBA System 21 was 3.5.2

The Eight Project Management Skills

Back in my early twenties I joined a company called JBA. Based in Chertsey they were a software house specializing on the IBM System 38 (later to become the AS400 or iSeries). As an IT Consultant, my role was as diverse as plugging in printers, designing core software changes to affect hundreds of customers, writing specifications for application change and redevelopment through to meeting customers for project kickoff, planning and signoff. I w

I was unwittingly entering the world of project management since every task I worked on was a project in its own right. The company I worked for successfully turned a reasonable programmer into a poor project manager!

Worse than that the company also wanted me to be the ‘technical consultant"  of the various projects that I was handed and/or involved in. This basically meant that I had to learn a jack of all trades work ethos that allowed me to be involved in every element of a given process.

What I needed was the project management skills to manage change.

Picture my frazzled brain by mid-week: “I must get this design optimised…but I must get it done by Friday and not spend any more than 15 hours doing it

Third Party Software - Chicago IBMi (AS400) JBA Consultant

JBA System21 Specialists

Toby loved his old website... but... it was time for a new faceToby Schofield is owner of Third Party Software Catalyst which provides consultancy and programming services on the AS/400 platform. He has a great deal of experience customizing functions and integrating third party products to core systems like JBA.

The Third Party Website website was launched back in 2002. The website design remit was very simple - Toby wanted a basic and clean looking website with few pages and no "twiddly bits" - So that's what we gave him: Simple HTML with (only a very slight twiddle) a drop down DHTML menu and a little bit of FLASH animation to liven things up slightly.

Simple but effective.

Feb 2010 Update: It was time for something new so we rebuilt the 3PSC website using Drupal 6.5 - Once again, a simple and straightforward Drupal integration using a standard Drupal theme. Core modlues included CKEDITOR, VIEWS, IMAGEFIELD, XMLSITEMAP, TWITTER and a few others. We think its a big improvement and looks just as simple but even more effective:

Core JBA systems generally need a certain degree of customization to meet your specific business needs and Toby specializes in the design and implementation of these customizations, making sure they fit seamlessly into the functionality and look and feel of the core system.

These are examples of recent issues addressed by 3psc:

  • PKMS integration issues with partial transactions (Purchasing/SOP).
  • Manipulate sequence of shop floor documentation from Manufacturing (Operation sequence).
  • Attach purchase orders to work orders to avoid sub contract function.
  • Inquiries/Reports to detail specific MRP results with out running MRP.
  • Very fast run time reports/inquiries with flexible, generic selection criteria.
  • More specific reports to reduce cross reference to understand results.
  • User defined entry to System/21 with environment/Company.
  • Additional rules applied to warehousing for cross docking etc.
  • General bug fixing/enhancements in all applications.
