essential software that needs to be installed when rebuilding a pc after a virus
Re-installing my trusty little Thinkpad Z60T is a process that I've been through a dozen times since I first fired this little beauty up in late 2005. It's had just about every flavour of operating system installed from Windows95 through Vista to various flavours of Linux (Ubuntu was definitely my favourite by the way)
After this morning nasty little virus interlude, and as it's just been a long time since I last installed anything exciting on it, I think it's time to try out the Windows Seven Beta... or maybe Ubuntu... or perhaps just plain old Windows... [insert hmmmmmm here]
So this is the process that going to happen this afternoon... probably...
Install Windows 7 - I've download the Beta from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/beta-download.aspx
- or -
Install Ubuntu - from http://www.ubuntu.com - its neat and just simply works, but, I had some problems with skype last time so I'm not sure... that was about a year ago mind you. :-/
- or -
Install Vista again - from my DVD. I really like Vista. It's simple, intuitive and does exactly what it says with some seriously sexy applications bundled in there. Not to mention that its the global standard in personal computing operating systems. But I still keep wandering if I should stand up and say "I'm not a number I'm a free man" or some other random 1960's type quote referring to "sticking to the man"
Whichever way I go then next step will be to import from backup:
- documents
- images
- videos
- music
Then install all the critical software
- AntiVirus (not sure which version will work with Windows7 - gonna try AVG)
- OpenOffice - Windows/Linux
- Skype - an absolute essential. online phone numbers, free video calling and great VOIP
- FileZilla - a perfect opensource FTP Client.
- Winrar - I like this as an alternative to WINZIP but could be easily converted elsewhere. I've heard that 7zip is decent open source version, but yet to try it in anger.
- Blackberry Desktop Client - unfortunately this doesnt work for Linux (as of Jan 09) but here some interesting Linux sync stuff
- Duplicate File Finder - or DuMP3 which is useful for keeping those network drives tidy. ;)
- eMule Morphxt - or shareaza or ?
- Free Download Manager
- Gimp
- Google Chrome
- Mozilla - FireFox, Thunderbird, Lightning
- codec-guide
- PKR - simply the best online poker app. Free play wioth practice money and a great way to enjoy the game of Texas Holdem Em.
OK - gonna start now... will report back when its done....
/me is still hitting himself on the forehead

Windows 7 was a great idea
Windows 7 was a great idea but it just gave me a handful too many glitches with drivers on my trusty old Thinkpad... so VISTA was installed and VOILA. Installed Vista, installed Service Pack1 and my trusty little thinkpad's running beautifully!
I've got a UBUNTU disc in front of me and will be installing that as a dual boot because I just like the idea of Linux way too much. 90% of the software that I use on a daily basis is opensource and runs perfectly on both operating systems (ie: Firefox, Thunderbird, Open Office, Gimp, Skype, etc...) but there are still a handful of Windows apps (mainly IBM AS400 specific things and of course Blacberry Sync which just doesnt work under Linux) that I havent currently got the time to play with trying to get running in WINE.
So Ubuntu will have to wait just a little longer....
