Many of you will have heard of Dave Litten - a Prince 2 accredited trainer and somewhat of a Project Management Guru. I spoke to Dave yesterday (from his sunny villa in Spain) and I'm very excited to announce that he's working on training video's for people studying for their Prince2 accreditation. I saw a sample video... it was fantastic!

Imagine the scene aboard HMS Victory:-

Nelson: "Order the signal, Hardy."

Hardy: "Aye, aye sir!"

Nelson: "Hold on, that's not what I dictated to Flags. What's the meaning of this?"

Hardy: "Sorry, sir?"

Awoke this morning to find my Outlook email not working because Outlook2007 was reporting that my PST file was damaged... much scratching of head ensued and vaguely worried faces were pulled while I drank a cup of coffee and wondered what to do next.

Outlook says there is problem with ..\appdata\local\microsoft\outlook\outlook.pst and to run scanpst.exe to fix it.

Video is easier than ever to upload to Youtube and let your friends and family (or even complete strangers) look through a window into your world. For some reason I assumed this was going to be deadly complicated but it turns out that it's deadly simple!

First you need to upload your video into Youtube - This is easy and just about anyone with a computer can do it. All the instructions and answers to your questions can be found here http://www.google.com/support/youtube/

a brief trip down memory lane with Uncle Bill

I've grown up with all the flavours of MS Windows from Windows 3.1 through to Vista...

Back in the early days my first experience of computers was with the BBC Acorn and BBC-B at School and at home I saved up my pocket money and bypassed the Sinclair ZX81's that my friends had got for Christmas and waited and saved and waited and saved and eventually got my sticky pre-pubescent fingers on a Sinclair Spectrum 16k.

The Eight Project Management Skills

Posted by Nick on Sat, 11/24/2007 - 10:39

Back in my early twenties I joined a company called JBA. Based in Chertsey they were a software house specialising on the IBM System 38 (later to become the AS400 or iSeries). As an IT Consultant, my role was as diverse as plugging in printers, designing core software changes to affect hundreds of customers, writing specifications for application change and redevelopment through to meeting customers for project kickoff, planning and signoff.

Mapping visitors to the website

Posted by Nick on Sun, 11/18/2007 - 09:00

Just for the geeky / nerdy / techie / cone heads among us some wonderful websites allow a simple installation of free website maps. This little bits of fluff show the location of visitors to the website from all over the globe. It's one of those self gratifying things that makes you think "oooh, someone from the Antarctic has just read my blog"

I've narrowed it down to 2 favourites and will be running one or the other over the next few weeks until I decide which one I like the best.

Risk Assessment and Management

Posted by Nick on Fri, 11/09/2007 - 13:18

You've used your Project Management Tools to create a detailed plan for your project and you believe you've accounted for everything.

What could possibly go wrong? Plenty! The question is, "Where will the project go awry and what can you do to avert disaster?" Assessing and managing risks is the best weapon you have against project catastrophes. By evaluating your plan for potential problems and developing strategies to address them, you'll improve your chances of a successful, if not perfect, project.
